How Salary Percentiles Work
A salary percentile tells you what percentage of workers in your occupation earn less than you. For example, if you're in the 75th percentile, you earn more than 75% of people with the same job title.
About Our Data
We use the latest Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which surveys over 1.1 million establishments and covers 800+ detailed occupations. Data includes 10th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th, and 90th percentile wage estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good salary percentile?
Being above the 50th percentile means you earn more than half of your peers. The 75th percentile and above is considered very competitive, while the 90th percentile puts you among the top earners in your field.
Why does location affect my percentile?
Salaries vary significantly by metro area due to cost of living, local demand, and industry concentration. A $100K salary may be above the median in Houston but below it in San Francisco.
How often is the data updated?
The BLS releases updated OEWS data annually, typically in the spring for the prior year. We update our calculator within one week of each new release.
